When purchasing foam for mattresses or as upholstery foam,
you may come across different words
to express how firm the latex foam layers are:
ILDs, density & firmness.
Let's take a look at these.
ILD stands for Indentation Load Deflection. ILD is a measure of how much pressure it takes to compress a piece of foam from its original thickness to 75% of it. For example, from 4 inches to 3 inches.
ILD is usually used to show the firmness of latex foam pads. The higher the ILD number, the firmer the latex foam is. The lower, the softer.
Higher ILD latex foam layers are of high density. High density latex foam are extra supportive and durable. We supply high density latex layers to foam mattress manufacturers as base foam. Lower ILD latex foam sheets are perfect comfort layers for a foam mattress.
Natural latex foam suppliers in China often use density in measurement kg/m3 on their website. For instance, 70D means 70 kg/m3. If you want to know what 70D equals in ILD, you need to converted 70 kg/m3 to 4.37 lb/ft3 first.
Refer to following chart:

Different latex pillow and mattress manufacturers in China may have their own standards for latex foam firmness. When buying latex foam online, remember to enquire exact density data & test samples in person.
